大提琴这项乐器是在十六世纪由阿玛第家族延革传统的古大提琴中的低音提琴改良而成，大提琴的惯用拼法Cello是將义大利文原本的violoncello缩短的写法，原义是「小型的低音维奥尔琴」。在巴洛克时代初期，维尔奥琴家族的尺寸大小依不同製琴家族和地方的需要而有各种不同的型制，並没有一个约定俗成的標准尺寸和音高。cello这个字义大利原文是“小”的意思，跟中文译的“大”提琴正好相反，那是因为当初命名是以相对於更大的低音维奥尔琴而来。
大提琴在巴洛克时代相当受到作曲家的重视，如韦瓦第、巴哈都为大提琴写过独奏乐曲，虽然他们所用的大提琴可能比较接近维奥尔琴。到了古典时代，大提琴的地位沦於伴奏乐器，较常被乐团和四重奏使用，许多作曲家像莫札特都不曾考虑为大提琴写作独奏乐曲，只有海顿和包凯利尼为大提琴写过独奏协奏曲，后者本身更是知名的大提琴家。贝多芬虽然为大提琴写了五首奏鸣曲和多首变奏曲，但他对於大提琴独奏的地位还是有怀疑，因此奏鸣曲中给予大提琴的地位並没有超越钢琴，一直到了德弗札克的协奏曲，大提琴才获得在协奏曲中大量独奏的机会，也因此他的这首协奏曲始终受到喜爱。
这份选辑，六张CD选录101首大提琴乐章，最后两张完整收录巴哈六首无伴奏大提琴组曲的全曲，所选录的是法国大提琴家詹德隆（Maurice Gendron）在一九七二年录下的版本。詹德隆曾是曼纽因和妹妹合组钢琴的三重奏之一员，他们一同合作了二十五年。生前使用的史特拉第瓦里名琴，就以他命名，现在则传给了德国大提琴女杰Maria Kliegel。
